Ask the right questions!
Many wedding vendors complain that brides
and grooms call and ask only one question: "what's your
price"? What's wrong with asking about price first? Well
... without knowing more about a service than its price
-- and, knowing more about what you want -- it's impossible
to evaluate whether a price is high or low, fair or unreasonable.
For example, let's say you call three DJs,
and get three prices: $750, $1,000, and $1,500. If you're
on a budget, it might be tempting to just book the $750 DJ.
But, what if that $750 DJ package only lasts
four hours -- and, you're hoping to dance through the night?
Or, what if that DJ's sound equipment can't fill the hall
you've booked for your reception? Or, what if you need more
than one set-up to accommodate both your ceremony amplification
and your reception -- and, you can only get that with the
$1,500 DJ? Even worse, what if your $750 choice doesn't guarantee
you the DJ you spoke with -- so they'll send anyone who's
available, regardless of whether he has any knowledge of your
event?
When you don't know what you don't know,
it's tempting to put more emphasis on what you understand
-- e.g., the money. But, you could be making a big mistake
by concentrating only on the one or two questions you know
you should be asking, instead of admitting your inexperience.
A better approach: ask vendors to explain
to you what's different about their services versus alternatives.
You might find that some seemingly "expensive" vendors
offer much better value than "bargain" alternatives
-- or, you might find that some higher priced packages include
things you don't want or need. Learning about the differences
between vendors to understand more about the things you don't
know, but should be considering -- and to make better decisions.
